Medtronic, the global leader in medical technology, has awarded the first Alan Olsen Leadership Scholarship Award to Sherman Sutton of Memphis.
Sutton is a 10th-grader at the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering (MASE).
Medtronic, the Memphis-based spinal business of Medtronic Inc., awarded Sutton the $4,000 scholarship at a reception held in his honor.
"Winning this scholarship has given me the confidence that I can do anything that I set my mind to and I can achieve great things," said Sutton. The 10th-grader is hoping to attend Miami University in Ohio. "I chose to participate in the scholarship program because I was concerned about being able to attend college financially," Sutton said.
Ten students applied for the Alan Olsen Leadership Scholarship. A selection committee comprised of Medtronic employees reviewed essays written by MASE students on the importance of leadership and what makes a great leader. "Being able to help transform today's youth is what our scholarship program is all about," said James Price of Medtronic. "Creating leaders and giving them the resources to lead is a goal of our organization." MASE students who applied for the scholarship attended the reception.
The Alan Olsen Leadership Scholarship is named after the founder of Danek, a spinal company established in Memphis 25 years ago. Danek later merged with Sofamor S.A. and then was purchased by Medtronic in 1999.
